Objectives and Content

Objective:

Introduction into concepts and methods in nuclear and particle physics

Content:

Topics are introduced with key experiments. The course covers tools (accelerators, detectors), particles and nuclei and their substructure, symmetries and conservation laws, interactions (electromagnetic, weak, strong), electroweak theory of the Standard Model and QCD, nuclear models (quark model, liquid drop model, Fermi gas model, shell model, collective model) and Nuclear and Particle Astrophysics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

  • concepts in particle and nuclear physics
  • key experiments in nuclear and particle physics

  • have the capability of doing back-of-the-envelope calculations in a diversity of situations

The student develops further the skills to

  • be able to uncover "alternative facts" in public discussions

Required Previous Knowledge

Basic knowledge of minimum 60 ECTS in physics.

Mandatory attendance at first lecture

Forms of Assessment

Oral exam.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
