Course description

Objectives and Content

Aim

The international programme in developmental psychology focuses on developmental processes throughout the lifespan, but mainly during adolescence and adulthood, with emphasis on the influence of biological, cognitive, psychosocial and environmental factors. There is also a focus on different theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence.

Course content

There is a wide range of themes, which include the following:

  • Different theoretical perspectives in developmental psychology;
  • Moral, social, language and cognitive development;
  • Identity development and positive youth development;
  • Ageing, demography and development in the general population

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

The student:

  • Has knowledge on theories and research in developmental psychology
  • Has knowledge on how biological, cognitive, psychological, social and moral factors can influence development across the life span

Skill

The student:

  • Can reflect on theoretical models and research evidence regarding change processes in development across the lifespan
  • Can reflect on how various factors can hinder or facilitate development

General competence

The student:

  • Can explain various developmental processes within theoretical framework
  • Is able to integrate existing knowledge on different factors in a comprehensive understanding of developmental processes across the life span

Lectures

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

No mandatory assignments.

Lectures are optional.

Forms of Assessment

A 4-hour school exam, containing up to 3 questions across the course syllabus from which students would be required to answer 2.

Grading Scale

The grading system for the school exam will be grades A-F.

Teaching material will be made known to the students before the start of each semester.

Course Evaluation

The course will be evaluated in accordance with the Faculty of Psychology's routine for participatory evaluation and the University of Bergen's Quality Assurance System.

Examination Support Material

Support materials are not permitted (except for a dictionary. The dictionary must be non-lexical and preapproved by the faculty).
