Alex Wolf received his doctoral degree in computational drug design from the Free University Berlin and joined the Department of Biomedicine as a postdoctoral fellow within the LEAD IA programme in 2025. His research focuses on the assessment, validation, and application of generative models for drug design, particularly to aid in the development of novel antibiotics. De novo design algorithms can be used for the exploration of understudied chemical space and hold great potential for the creation of new chemotypes, raising the likelihood of discovering first-in-class drugs of unexplored mechanisms of action. This makes generative design a highly valuable means to facilitate the development of innovative pharmacotherapeutic agents and a viable approach to meet the dire need for new antibiotics in the face of growing bacterial resistance. The computationally generated molecules will be assessed for novelty, synthetic accessibility, and interaction potential in the protein binding site, and the most promising ones will ultimately be subjected to synthesis and experimental validation.
